5. Gros Morne

Gros Morne

One of Canada's  Natural Treasures

Part 1.

August 15, 2016

Some times we need to step out of our comfort zones to experience the most amazing things in life. Stepping  out of my comfort zone is what I did last week. To be more specific I went camping for the first time, it might might not be a big deal for some of you but for me it is a big deal, I am the most comfortable when I am in the city surrounded by civilization and commodities that city life provides. To tell you the truth I was really nervous and excited to experience something new, to bond with nature a little bit more.

I went camping at Gros Morne National Park located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. I made the decision of going camping because I wanted to experience something new, something that I would be proud to say I did and Gros Morne was the perfect place to start this adventure. Since camping was new to me but not to my boyfriend, he was in charge of making sure we had everything we needed in order to have a pleasant stay (he did an amazing job).  I booked our campsite at KOA for four nights and five days. On August 9 at 12:00 pm our adventure began, we left St. John's taking the TCH West in route to our destination. With a couple of stops in the way we made it to the camp ground at 7:30 pm, just before the sun set. One of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen with different shades of red, pink, orange, and blue with perfectly fluffy clouds.

Setting the tent and getting the air mattress in the tent was the funniest thing ever. We  did not realize (to be exact I did not realize) that the camp ground had no outlets for power and our air mattress needed power to inflate so we went looking for an outlet and found one at the bathrooms that was probably 300 meters away from our site. I made the decision to use the plug and walk with a queen size inflated air mattress all the way back to the site. To say the least it was the funniest thing EVER!!! For all of the experience campers around we looked hilarious like the newbies we where. Dann (aka my boyfriend) was so embarrassed that we had to carry the mattress back but just that made my camping experience. After having solved the air mattress problems we made a fire roasted some winners and made hot dogs for supper and concluded the long day of driving and settling with an early night.

Camping makes you wake up REALLY early, so as you can guess on August 10th we woke up at 7:30 am, made some breakfast, took a quick shower and started our day by buying our park tickets and driving to our first hike of the day. The Lonmond river hike, it was 11:3o am and it was already 20 degrees (for Newfoudland that is crazy weather). We started our hike and it seemed like a trail as we  started to go deeper and deeper in the trail the trail disapear and we had to walk through the river bead and through rocks, after a while we lost the trail completely and a little confused we paused had a little lunch and turned back. I will insert some pictures of the Lonmond hike now.

Some rocks with cool textures

Having finished hiking (what we thought was the right hike) and just being 1:00 pm we decided to do another hike, the Lookout hike at Woody Point.  The Discovery Center is at the start of the trail and having decided to take the afternoon in a slower peace we explore the Discovery Center learning everything we did not know about the rock formations, the vegetation and wild life that Gros Morne has to offer and acts as a host to.  After having a little snack we started hiking the moderate Lookout trail looking forward to the promising views waiting for us at the top of the hike.  After one hour and a half and with some stops on the way up (because of me) we made it to the very top of the mountain. Finding a pair of red chairs and amazing, breathtaking views of Bonne Bay, Norris Point, Woody Point;  breathtaking views of the whole Gros Morne area. I will insert some pictures of the view below. We finished the day with another fire as a true camping experience.

August 11 was a more relaxed day, still woke up early but we stayed in bed (aka the tent) for a little bit and then made breakfast took a shower. Since it was a rainy foggy day we decided to go explore the town near the camp ground, first we drove to Norris Point a really small community with an amazing view. After exploring the small town of Norris Point we drove to Rocky Harbour a bigger town but still small, it had an amazing ocean view even with the rain it was pretty amazing. Looking around some souvenir shops we decided to drive up to the light house. Lobster Cove lighthouse, we explore the grounds surrounding the light house, it was really magical (it reminded me Hogwarts). The inside of the light house was dated to when it was inhabited and it was pretty amazing to see how they live back then. After all the exploring done in the morning I needed a nap, after the nap we attempted to fishing but that did not turned out hahahaha. We finished the day with an ice cream at a small restaurant call Earl's and a multimedia show at the Visitor Center leaning about the importance of Gros Morne as a world heritage.
